About
Butter My Toast is a free photo booth that runs right in your browser. Point your camera, pick from over 60 live effects, and snap a photo.
How it works
Every effect runs on your own device, using your browser’s graphics hardware (WebGL). The camera picture goes straight from your camera to the page and is never sent anywhere. When you take a photo, it’s created on your device, and you choose whether to save it or share it.
There are no accounts, no ads and no tracking cookies. We only count visits, with cookieless analytics that can’t identify you. See the privacy policy for the details.
Tips
- Tap an effect in the grid to open it. Use the ✕ or press Esc to go back to all effects.
- Use the arrows, or ← →, to flip between effects or pages.
- Press Space to take a photo. Quad effects take four shots in a row.
- Settings lets you switch off the mirror, the countdown, the flash or the sound, take square photos, or add a small buttermytoast.com label to your photos.
- The power button turns the camera off completely, and so does closing the tab.
- If the camera doesn’t start, check that your browser is allowed to use it in its site settings.

Where it came from
Butter My Toast grew out of the early days of HTML5, when webcam effects in the browser were brand new. It started from an open-source project of that era and has been rebuilt from the ground up for today’s browsers, with plain HTML, CSS and JavaScript and no outside code.
